Our Mission: Advancing Sustainability Together

Founded in 1999, the Humboldt Waste Management Authority (HWMA) is a collaborative partnership between the County of Humboldt and five local cities: Arcata, Blue Lake, Eureka, Ferndale, and Rio Dell. We are dedicated to fostering a more sustainable future through comprehensive waste management and resource recovery.

What We Do

HWMA operates and maintains a network of facilities and services that facilitate efficient waste management in our community. These include:

Disposal Services

• Operation of the Hawthorne Street Transfer Station, the primary disposal facility for municipal solid waste in the region.
• Management of the Cummings Road Landfill, ensuring responsible disposal of non-recyclable materials.

Recycling Services

• Operation of the Eureka Recycling Center, accepting various recyclable materials from local residents and businesses.
• Administration of the curbside recycling program in partnership with contracted haulers.

Waste Reduction & Resource Recovery

• Provision of a One-Stop Drop Off center for residents to dispose of household hazardous waste, electronics, and other materials not accepted through regular garbage or recycling services.
• Implementation of innovative programs to encourage waste reduction and promote reuse and recycling in the community.

Transparency and Accountability

HWMA operates with the highest ethical standards and emphasizes transparency in all its activities. We regularly hold Board meetings open to the public and publish relevant information on our website on waste collection schedules, fees, board agendas, and disposal services.
